We had our beloved traditional meat pie (tourtière) for dinner last night and it was wonderful. I grew up always having it the night before Thanksgiving and Christmas and it just IS the holidays to me. Kudos to Ernie for making it for the first time. He nailed it.
I actually made the cranberry sauce all by myself. Yes, it’s the simplest thing in the world to do, but still, I did it myself, gathering ingredients, stirring it as I perched on a stool in front of the stove. I gotta say it took it out of me…cooking is so hard—you wouldn’t believe how much you lean, both your back and your neck. So I curled up with a pain pill after giving Ernie instructions for the meat pie but it felt so wonderful to actually have made something! And for that, I am extremely grateful.
As fantastic as the meat pie was last night, and it was, it’s always even better the next day. It was SO good this morning that both of us couldn’t stop moaning and exclaiming over it as we ate while watching the beginning of the Thanksgiving Day Parade on TV.
SOOOOO good.
Now we’re just savoring the taste of it and feeling the holiday. Sola Gratia had an incredible Thanksgiving share. Talk about bounty.
After we ate I said “You know what we need? Morning madeira!” and we both laughed. My father liked madeira and on holiday mornings he would say, “have some madeira, my dear,” and serve us some in his antique wineglasses. A little while later Ernie came in the room with a bit of sherry (as we had no madeira) in some of my Dad’s wineglasses.
On to a lazy day with some cooking and an afternoon viewing of Planes, Trains and Automobiles this afternoon.
More to follow but I hope this Thanksgiving is a good one for all of you.
Onward thankfully.
Love,
Cynthia
Love your cooking stories. We had 4/5 of our kids for dinner (Tess and Mick were in Texas). I made the turkey and Mary made the stuffed squash. And we also had mashed potatoes, a corn casserole (by Law), peas, cranberry sauce and some pumpkin cake (from Julia). Happy Thanksgiving.
Hooray for Ernie making the tortière! That is truly stepping up. Glad you made the cranberries. They look perfect. I had surgery Monday and recovery has been slower than anticipated. So, I'm taking a load off and Joel is making dinner while I watch the parade and dog show. Just three of us (my sister Kate) this year. We adjust. So much to be thankful for, including dear friends like you. Wishing you and yours a wonderful holiday. 🥂🥰🦃
