I thought I’d already published this post but it appears not. We didn’t do a ton of wandering in 2023 and much of it was confined to more rural areas (not big on neon) but we did come across a few nice signs.
Not far from St. Louis, I’m surprised I’d never come across this one. The name brings back slightly blurry memories of the Sundowners playing below the Trailways bus station in Chicago. Another place, another time, or perhaps Another Girl, Another Planet.
I don’t know about you, but “Best Cherry Coke” just makes this one all the better.
One of my favorite pictures from last year.
A Route 66 classic with newly refurbished signs.
You just can’t go wrong with an ice cream cone in the sky.
I love this little sign. Super rural location but there it stands. You just have to feel proud of it.
A Minnesota sign Leo got for me while he was traveling.
And another one from Leo. He truly is the best.
I can’t believe I’d never stopped to get this one, just outside of St. Louis, and a classic. I like the little lobster waving at us.
Ok, this one is TRULY a classic for me. I remember going here as a kid and now our beloved Diana lives close by so I’ll see it more often!
This sign may not be big and flashy, but for God’s sake people, it’s a neon faucet with neon water drops!!! ❤️
I think this one was the biggest like getter on Instagram. Just beautiful in so many ways, from the ghost sign on the side of the building to the facade to the little top hat and cane. I do wonder what the interior is like but I believe it’s currently a strip club so we’ll just let the mystery be as Iris DeMent sang, and Emily Ann covered so beautifully at the Rosebowl yesterday evening.
I do regret that I’ve never seen the shell shaped Shell station. Maybe someday. But in the meantime, this was lovely. Such a beautiful logo and a sharp little station.
Just across from the Ariston Cafe.
And one from Owen when HE was traveling. Those boys are the best.
Speaking of boys, we lured Owen (and Trinity and Duncan) out last night so we could buy him a birthday drink. Teri generously did the buying actually (thank you, girl). Leo even came!! And he’s not even covering his face. My beautiful boys. Happy 22nd to my forever beloved Owen.
Onward.
Love,
Cynthia
Was the Chuckwagon picture on the outskirts of Fairview Heights, IL??
