Random Notes from the Sandwich Life: July 6, 2025 (how can it be July 6 already?)
Beautiful lettuce from Sola Gratia and a pan seared lamb chop. Just salt and pepper on it. The salad greens just have a drizzle of olive oil and a bit of kosher salt. My very favorite way to eat salad greens.
Look at that brave little nasturtium down there. It must have been there lying underneath the dirt and finally thought, “Well, all the other guys are up, maybe I’ll give it a try.” 💚
THE FIRST NASTURTIUM FLOWER! ALL HAIL THE FIRST NASTURTIUM FLOWER!
Got the newest poster up on the wall! Thank you, Rod. ❤️
THE FIRST ZINNIA IS HERE! ALL HAIL THE FIRST ZINNIA!
A bit of Biscuit Day. I forgot until it was half gone.
Serrano peppers in the window box.
Another week at the CSA, looking out from my geranium.
Esther likes getting into the party spirit. Thanks for her Fourth of July headband, Eva and Heather.
Sack is coming along. She might love Ernie as much as Bob did some day. That’s a mighty big challenge but she’s doing her best. Ernie deserves it of course.
SANDWICH LIFE RECOMMENDATIONS
The Silver Slicer cucumber! I got some in my Sola Gratia share and they are just heavenly. It’s sort of a lemony blonde cucumber and it doesn’t have have even the tiniest bit of bitterness, crunchy and sweet and refreshing. You probably could still plant for this year, couldn’t you? Or check the Sola Gratia Farmers Market on Saturdays at Lincoln Square in Urbana.
My grandmother taught me to slice off the ends of the cucumber and rub them on the cut side to get rid of bitterness but this is easier and truly delicious!
Buttermilk Loaf from ToothButter Cottage Bakery Although the spelt sourdough English muffins will always have my heart, this bread is amazing. The flavor, the texture, it’s just a totally different beast than grocery store bread. Well worth every penny, I promise you!
Onward to the rest of a still-feels-like-a-holiday-Sunday.
Love,
Cynthia
