1. Awwwww…each day I feel a bit better. YES! Such a relief. There’s always this point when you’ve been sick for some time that you start to think that maybe you do feel good and this is just what it feels like. Then you start to get flashes of actually feeling better and you want to open your arms and yell, “WELCOME BACK!” That’s how I’m feeling. I still fade pretty quickly but I’m getting there.
2. The other night we (well, mostly Ernie, but I supervised) made that black pepper turmeric chicken and asparagus dish I posted the other day and good god in heaven it was good. I ate it in my little sick corner and then promptly collapsed into bed.
3. For breakfast, leftovers with an egg. Evidently Ernie shook his wet hands over the pan by mistake which led to the interesting pattern on the white. I thought it was some fancy new technique from the Eggmaster.
4. I got my latest copy of Bon Appetit. They have continued their hard hitting analytic cultural investigations into regional foods with an article on the best chicken wings in Buffalo. Like the recent article on Chicago hot dogs, it reeks of a listicle assigned to an intern. It makes me sad. I used to get so excited when I got a cooking magazine.
5. I posted on Facebook yesterday asking for advice on semi fluffy, comforting tv to watch. Woah. Tons of responses and lots of great ideas. It was my friend, Ginna, for the win however, with Fisk. It was the perfect call. Thanks, Ginna!
If anyone wants my recent recommendations, they are as follows:
The Holdovers I hardly ever watch new movies. We watched this and I LOVED it (of course I kinda ate up the New England boys’ school aesthetic too). I decided I should watch LOTS of new movies but I got over that quickly. I really loved this one though.
The Cafe Sweet, quiet, seaside, British. I loved it.
West Wing Ok, there aren’t enough female characters and the ones they have are portrayed kinda….wonky at times, particularly in the first season or two. That gets better as it goes though. And I don’t know why many of the male characters are less than appealing (Toby? Josh?). Just the idea of hanging out with the President, the First Lady, Charlie, Mrs. Landingham and CJ is enough for me however. And it’s idealistic which feels kinda nice these days.
Loudermilk If you are, or ever have been, a record store kind of person, curmudgeonly or not, you will love this.
Lessons in Chemistry For some reason I was surprised by this series. Recommended.
This Is Going to Hurt We just finished this and I really loved it. It’s a memoir about working in OB/GYN in a British NHS hospital.
6. VERY exciting news for Moccasin Creek Festival coming up. THE BRILLIANT AARON LEE TASJAN has been added! That’s on top of CHUCK PROPHET plus Shinyribs, Mary Gauthier, Chris Smither, etc., etc. Bill Poss and company really do a great job. Highly recommended.
Oh, and I just finally got the new ALT album and it came with a delightful little pin. God, I love him. #therealdeal
7. Last night, as we binge watched Fisk we had open faced BLTs with avocado. We only had two pieces of bread hence the open faced plan. It quickly became more of a deconstructed sandwich but despite the lack of a summer tomato, it was delicious. Simple and tasty and delicious. I’d call that a win for a lazy, rainy Saturday evening.
And lastly, thanks to Stig for making the biscuits today. They are outstanding.
Onward. Good thoughts for a good week.
Love,
Cynthia
You should read the book of Lessons in Chemistry. It has so much more to it. Loved it! OH! and loved Loudermilk! We have been watching several of the Harlan Coben series on Netflix, if you haven't gotten to any of them, they are all good mysteries.
Love Café, Fisk and Loudermilk! Holdovers was so good!! 🥰
