Well, I’ve strung this wander out for a long time, haven’t I? Our last day, as we headed home on the old National Road, was quieter but full of wonderful sights, and sites. This stretch was more familiar to us but there’s always something new to see and there’s always something, well, many things, that are gone. It made me sad that I couldn’t even tell where the Melody Cruise-In had been. Sigh.
However, THIS is how we started our day.
The best breakfast in 2024 thus far award goes to Tee Jaye’s Country Place in Newark, Ohio.
The best food, the best service and I highly recommend Kristy as your server. I’m sure they’re all great but she was wonderful. We always order the same thing, two eggs over easy, hash browns and sausage patties. No toast, no pancakes. Black coffee for Ernie, iced tea for me, and I like just a bit of hot sauce too. It’s amazing HOW different that meal can be. This one was exemplary. It felt like the whole place was a well oiled machine. 10 out of 10! Oh, and of course a bonus point for the iced tea spoon.
Then we headed back to our beloved US 40. One of my favorite books is about US40 and its changes over the years.
I was happy to see this old friend.
Sadly, this branch of Schuler’s is closed, it’s supposed to have a nice period interior.
Home of Home-Made
A wonderful string of big old fat neon signs. I get a little golden buzz when I’m around them.
Even the somewhat bedraggled little guys.
From western Ohio into Eastern Indiana along 40 there used to be a string of antique shops. A few still hanging on.
I think this one used to have a shop that had some pattern glass. I remember it strangely vividly.
And then, I must confess, we were getting tired so we said farewell to my beloved National Road and headed to the interstate.
One of the best wanders we’ve had in a long time.
Onward!
Love,
Cynthia
Newark Ohio! There's a blast from the past. We lived on a farm about 15 miles from Newark and made weekly trips there for supplies. Never heard of Tee Jaye's.
