Well, the week started with us putting a spatchcocked turkey in the oven at 9:00 am as we were having our family Thanksgivingish meal that day. We thought we’d overdone the turkey we’d cooked for ourselves on Thanksgiving a bit so we decided to use the fancy meat thermometer that has a little remote to tell you when it hits the desired temperature on this one.
It works great, it just helps if you set it to FAHRENHEIT instead of Celsius, if you happen to live in the US.
Oops.
We planned to take it out around 155 degrees, as the temp would rise as it sat. It kept stalling at 99 degrees. It turns out that 99 degrees Celsius is a whopping 210 degrees Fahrenheit.
Yup. The turkey was ah, most certainly done.
Sigh.
On top of that my cooking skills continue to deteriorate. The Brussels sprouts didn’t get crispy, nobody liked my meat pie, used too many eggs in my stuffing strata.
I have officially and finally lost any cooking mojo I once had.
Leo’s brownies were great, as were Owen’s mashed potatoes. Uhhhh, my cranberry sauce was good. That’s something, right?
Win some, lose some. And I seem to yet again have a bit of a cold, which didn’t help. I have now sworn off all fodmap/gluten cheating to try to get myself feeling healthier again.
Oh, and it didn’t help that I got caught up in a work thing in the morning and so pushed the time back for everybody….twice.
Despite all that it was lovely to see folks, Owen, Trinity and Dennis. After everyone had left, we curled up on the couch, watched a Hallmark movie (I always subscribe to the channel for the season. Heh) and then promptly tumbled into bed.
I won’t even go into Tuesday. Suffice to say it wasn’t the best day. Eventually we curled up, watched our daily Hallmark and I tumbled into bed to read. Do you sense a pattern?
I did get lots done for work yesterday which felt good and a chunk done today. My plans for the rest of the day? More work, another Hallmark and hopefully something good for dinner that doesn’t involve turkey. Needless to say, I think we’re doing ham for Christmas. The phrase ‘needless to say’ alway makes me think of Was (Not Was).
Over the weekend we’ll decorate the tree as the following weekend, on Sunday, December 15 at 4 pm we’ll be celebrating with Fats Kaplin and Kristi Rose! All are welcome. Potluck at 4 for apps/desserts although I may make the official House Concert Noodles. Music, magic, and joy to follow. Info on Facebook or just yell. We’d love to have you!
Oh, and in other exciting news:
I got little slippers for my walker skis because they’re scratching the hell out of our hardwood floors. I’m so excited. You can imagine what my Facebook ads and suggested pages look like with purchases like these.
I’ve taken very few pictures of late but here are a few.
Building a fire, father and son edition.
Kale and apple salad salad alongside some pasta.
And THIS picture. This picture has lots of things to say, Hallmark movie in the background, vomit bags just to the right of the book. When Ceil Allen lent me this book, as we sat at Fries and Peanuts together one night talking and laughing I protested. I said, “NEVER lend me a book. I’m TERRIBLE about returning them!” She insisted. I took it home and have yet to read it. Man, I miss Ceal. I miss her more than I ever could have imagined. Whenever we drive by Fries and Peanuts Ernie gets mournful, saying how much he wants to walk in there and find her and Roger. And she’d give us that grin and say, “How you doing, darlin’?”
Love, love, love til the end of time as one of my favorite people once said to me.
Onward.
Love,
Cynthia
Oh, and lastly, much, much love and gratitude to folks renewing their subscription to my Substack as I start my second year here. ❤️
