Eating for Award Shows, before Bjork's Dress was Iconic and Low Fodmap Nachos
Plus, Ernie's Picks starts tomorrow
Ernie and I used to LOVE awards shows. Even for awards of things we never watched or saw, we would snuggle up and watch them. We always prepared appetizers to nibble on as we watched. I don’t think they’re as fun as they used to be. Everybody got stylists so when you get someone wearing something in truly poor taste they’re generally going for that effect. It’s just not the same. Remember when Bjork’s dress was just considered horrible rather than iconic?
We’ve been watching them again of late though. Last night was the Golden Globes, always considered a fun one as the audience can drink. It was still somewhat tasteful, although in a totally overblown way (although I only made it about halfway through). There were a few dresses that stood out for varying reasons. Natasha Lyonne’s art deco tower of a dress and then there was the beautiful white dress embroidered with vaginas.
This red dress was beautiful AND she had the best acceptance speech because she thanked all the ASSISTANTS of agents and managers, the ones who actually answer the phone.
We did indeed go with appetizers. We decided on nachos. We’re kind of going through a new nachos obsession, or perhaps a nachos renaissance. I used to love nachos way back when. When we lived in Michigan we used to get the best nachos at the Full Moon Cafe in Ann Arbor. I don’t remember what made them so special but they were great. I still remember all the sheet music of songs about the moon on those brick walls.
One thing that is tough about eating Low Fodmap is eating out at restaurants, particularly different cuisines like Mexican (restaurants deserve a whole other post). Sigh. We have done a pretty good job making these low fodmap however.
They’re not beautiful but I would be suspicious of nachos that were.
We spread our tortilla chips on the pan (could have used sturdier chips, oh well). We cooked a pound of chorizo (this was the Harvest Market made and I think it was less garlicky than the typical Mexican ones you often see in the store, which was good in this instance) in a pan and drained off the fat.

Then we layered on the chorizo, some jalapenos and cheese. My rule is always go with more of everything than you think except cheese. Use less cheese than you think because otherwise it can become a sodden mess. Not that sodden messes don’t have their time and place of course.
The key to all this is that you can buy LOW FODMAP SALSA!!! Fody Foods makes all sort of low fodmap items from salad dressings to tomato sauces to ketchup. My favorite however is the salsa. Bright and tart with just enough texture to taste great on a chip. The mild one seems to pretty readily available in stores, though I would like to try the medium and green versions.
We served them with cut up avocado on top and the salsa and some Greek yoghurt (instead of sour cream) on the side.
I’ll have to start planning for our next awards show.
In possibly related big news: the first episode of Ernie’s Picks drops tomorrow.
