Good Lord, I forgot I hadn’t posted my last day of our Mary Sack trip! I’m going to keep it to one lone stop: Wigwam Village #2 in Cave City, Kentucky.
I have seen pictures of this for years, as well as the other existing one in Arizona (oh, turns out there is one in California too) but somehow that in no way prepared me for their physical presence. Seeing them in person was a completely different experience. We were driving on the Dixie Highway ❤️ and knew it was coming up but it still was utterly shocking to come upon it. It was like a little army of white gumdrops. Well, gumdrops aren’t pointy but somehow candy came to mind. Ernie pointed out that they looked more like Hershey’s Kisses and launched into some kind of plan to cover them in foil for a Hershey’s promotion. I just stared and stared and stared. I could have cried they were so beautiful. I believe they’ve just been re-stuccoed if that’s a word and so looked smooth and white and perfect. So much innocence, naivete, romanticism, misinformation and American make-a-buck enthusiasm all laid out right there on the roadside. The idea of travel and the journey being the gift itself. Just brilliant. I’m gonna have to stay there sometime.
The current owners seem to be doing a brilliant job of restoring the property as well as tackling the thorny questions of cultural appropriation, misinformation and the like. Do look here and here.
For some reason I found it nigh impossible to say wigwam correctly. I finally realized it’s from listening to Wig Wam Bam too often. Man, I wish I’d never read the lyrics but then it’s supposed to be based on my beloved Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s Hiawatha so I don’t know (throws hands in air).
Bringing it back to Biscuit Day. A particularly outstanding batch. A bit crumblier than usual. Along with the standard cheddar and bacon I also had a healthy schmear of Dijon mustard plus a light schmear of creamed honey. Mindboggling.
And now I would request your participation in a breakfast survey. We left Nashville pretty early because, well, that’s just what we do. We had breakfast on down the road but I was disappointed to see they did not offer sliced tomatoes because sliced tomatoes is one of my favorite things about breakfast in Nashville. However, we did have an excellent breakfast.

And thus ends the Great Mary Sack Trip of 2024. Best part of it, despite Wigwam Village #2? Mary Sack.
Onward.
Love,
Cynthia
