Oh man, that felt good. We had an absolutely perfect wander. Thanks to some beloved friends who gifted us their hotel reward points to get us another night, we had a two night wander. We roamed and we roamed and we roamed. It was heavenly. It does my heart so much good to be out there, finding signs and buildings and roads.
We got home last night, hugged Leo, chatted, shared pictures, his of trains, ours of roads and signs. Then we collapsed on our couch, ate frozen pizza (mine doctored up with a bit of feta and spinach) and watched the Grammys. I felt peaceful and happy. I was never on Twitter much, generally just if something horrific was happening in our world or during awards shows. Now that I never go on Twitter my favorite reading during award shows is the open comment thread on Drinks With Broads (the Substack for the folks that do GoFugYourself. You can’t comment if you’re not a paid subscriber, but you can still read.
I read some friends on facebook say that it was a wonderful show. I wondered yet again if I am totally parting ways with society. Ok, I did like Miley Cyrus. Tracy Chapman sounded great and looked gorgeous. Joni Mitchell was wonderful and it didn’t feel like a like a big tacky production. You can count on good taste when Brandi Carlile is involved. Oh, and I loved Joni’s cane. Despite those performances though, I thought much of it was awful. I thought the In Memoriam segment was horrible…disjointed, distracting and somehow disrespectful. The Tony Bennett Stevie Wonder thing? Good God, no. Annie Lenox with her tear painted face? Eh. Although it was nice to see Wendy and Lisa. I wanted to like it.The whole segment seemed like a disjointed variety show, (which I believe I stole from that Substack thread). Eh, maybe I am parting ways with society. And man, I have nothing against Oprah. I’m glad she’s thin if it makes her happy, mind you I don’t care if she’s thin or not, but why the hell is she seemingly everywhere? I finally gave up an hour before it was over (wait up for Billy Joel? I don’t think so) and went to bed to read and look at some of the pictures we took.
This morning I woke up physically tired but so happy. It’s funny, these wanders can be exhausting. It’s not like highway driving where you just focus on the road and let your mind go. When we wander, we’re looking constantly from side to side, sometimes we’re looking for a particular thing, other times we’re just looking for something that catches our eye. So, after about eight hours we tend to reach a point where we just can’t think or talk or do anything any longer. Then it’s time for a drink at a bar, some dinner to go ,and a hotel room. On the first night, our Best Western room was really quite nice, not fancy but nice. It had a tiled floor rather than carpet, and was quite big so Ernie would occasionally dance across it which gave me great pleasure. The second night hotel, a Hilton Doubletree was heavenly and may spoil us for Best Westerns. Ha. Not really but it was indeed lovely. The check in person was great and giggled with Ernie and gave us a King Suite that was accessible when Ernie mentioned to her that I had a cane and didn’t want to walk too far. We felt like we were being spoiled and well, it felt damned nice.
I have SO much to share with you but it will take some time to process, edit and write. I’ll leave you with just a few pictures.
Onward.
Love,
Cynthia
I have parted way with society
It makes me want to wander and wander. Maybe once Mary retires! Now I will settle for an occasional weekend trip to Chicago...or Oregon.
